Choosing the perfect wedding colors
From decorations to floral arrangements to invitations, the colors you choose for your wedding will show up throughout all stages of the celebration. Whether bright and bold hues or subtle pastels, color plays a big role in your wedding and reception.
Seasonality
When determining which colors to feature in your wedding and reception, most couples think first about the time of year their wedding will take place. Colors of the season are always a great guide to choosing your wedding colors.
Inspiration
Everyone tends to have at least one — or more — favorite colors. What colors are prevalent in your home? Do your clothes tend to be of a certain color? Is there a favorite element you want in your wedding — perhaps an heirloom wedding dress or your groom’s favorite tie — that can help you make a decision? Look for inspiration in fashion and home decor magazines.
How to use color
You love turquoise but a wedding that is only shades of green and blue would be very overwhelming. Instead, think of subtle ways to use color in your wedding:
- Wedding gown and accessories. A ribbon or sash can add a splash of color to traditional white and off-white gowns. Same for a hairpiece or piece of jewelry.
- The wedding party. Bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen’s ties or vests are great ways to introduce your featured color. For added affect, have your girls wear dresses of the same color — but differing styles.
- Stationary. Invitations are a great place to use color.
- Reception decor. Centerpieces, table runners and chair covers are great places to use a splash of color.
- Flowers. Traditionally, your flowers, those of your bridesmaids and the boutineers of the guys all tend to pick up your wedding’s chosen featured color.
